"The Biscuit Thief” was many years in the making. The kernel of an idea sprouted nearly 20 years ago while I was visiting Arkansas’ White River.
Beneath a dam stood a restaurant with a panoramic view of the water. Inside, dozens of vintage boat motors hung from the tall ceiling.
It got me thinking, “what else could these motors be on their own?” and, “who might use them without a boat?”
For instance, if balanced in just the right way by this agile boxer dog, could not a classic Evinrude outboard work as a chase vehicle to retrieve stolen Milk Bones? And what about one stolen by a swift but discourteous kestrel?
While I began roughing in the underpainting of this one in 2020, it would take another four years to complete the piece as it sat waiting for me to bring into full vision in late 2024. The painting is a celebration of a pursuit in nature not many of us get to witness in real life.
